Our Journey to Anilox Cleaning Excellence
In 2018, Niels Gerrits from BicarBlast approached Robert van Teeffelen at Lion Lasers with a challenge: existing laser systems for cleaning Anilox rolls were damaging the fine structures of high lines anilox sleeves or rolls. Niels noticed that the smallest dams, on high lineatures just 2 microns wide, were developing microcracks that eventually led to bigger damage. However, laser cleaning was the only method capable of removing the final 3 to 5% of contamination.
The challenge: Could Lion Lasers create a system that would clean 100% without damaging the anilox sleeves or rolls?
After thorough research, Lion Lasers discovered a unique approach that enabled safe and effective cleaning of Anilox sleeves or rolls. While the process involved overcoming several challenges, it led to the development of a reliable system through continuous testing and refinement over two years. The result was a groundbreaking solution that ensures thorough cleaning without compromising the integrity of the sleeves or rolls.
The first AL machine was born. The system delivered exceptional cleaning results without damaging the delicate Anilox structures. Our first customer was Oerlemans Plastics where Marinus van Kalkeren was working at that time. He praised the machine: “There is no other laser system worldwide that cleans Anilox rolls as effectively and safely as your AL machine”. With the AL1500 as a key factor Marinus and his colleagues where able to get their printing quality on a higher level whilst reducing set up time. Which led to printing First-Time-Right on most of the printing jobs. Reducing waist, chemical use and press-time. In short time Marinus set up AL laser systems in all printing companies of the Opack group.
The brand Anilox Lasers. It was five years later that Marinus, who remained enthusiastic about our flexographic solutions, would join Lion Lasers to take the lead in bringing Anilox Lasers to market. Where he can use his knowlegde to improve the sustainability of the flexographic industry on a larger scale. Lion Lasers in the meantime improved the system mainly for serviceability on a distance and easier maintenance. Ready to sell the system over longer distances so more companies can benefit from our solution.
